Billy Graham - The Cross

Billy Graham, the American preacher responsible for taking the Christian Gospel to more people than perhaps anyone else in history, died earlier today at 99 years of age.

It’s estimated that he shared the Gospel with approximately 210 million people, in nearly 200 countries, over 60 years of public preaching. Hundreds of millions of others listened to his sermons via television and radio broadcasts.

In 1954 he preached to 120,000 people in Wembley Stadium and during one visit to South Korea he shared the Gospel with an audience of over 1 million. He visited Scotland in 1955, 1961 and 1991, preaching to capacity crowds in large auditoriums and football stadiums.

Billy Graham’s message always centred on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ being the remedy for man’s sin and rebellion towards God. He once said ‘God proved His love on the cross. When Christ hung, and bled, and died, it was God saying to the world, “I love you”’.

He believed that forgiveness, eternal life and a home in Heaven could be found only through a personal faith in Jesus Christ. He said “We must trust Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and receive Him by personal invitation.”

In 2013, at the age of 95, Billy Graham recorded his final message to the world in a short film entitled “The Cross”. The preacher has gone home to Heaven, and yet his message remains as relevant today as it was when he began to preach it back in the 1930s. Billy Graham once famously said… “Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don't you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God.”
