who is jesus Christ?
Sadly most of us will be completely forgotten about by society within a few years of our death. Yet remarkably, almost 2,000 years after Jesus’ short life came to an end, we still celebrate His birth every Christmas and remember His death every Easter. There is no-one else like Him in history. So, who is Jesus Christ?
He existed Eternally
The Bible explains that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God and that there was no beginning to His existence. Alongside God the Father, and God the Holy Spirit, He is the co-creator of the universe and all that is in it. Amazingly, the Creator of all things, chose to leave His throne in Heaven to enter into His creation in human form.
He was born Miraculously
The birth of Jesus was unique. The Bible explains that Mary was a virgin prior to His birth and that the conception happened as a result of the activity of the Holy Spirit. The birth subsequently took place in Bethlehem, in humble, poverty stricken circumstances and the baby was laid in a manger. They named Him Jesus, meaning ‘Saviour’.
He lived Perfectly
For 33 years Jesus never put a foot wrong, or spoke a word out of place. He lived the life which sadly we are unable to live. A life of perfection. His own perfect life was a vital factor in allowing Him to die for the sins of others upon the cross.
He loved Supremely
Throughout His life, Jesus revealed the character of God to the people of earth. He demonstrated God’s mercy, grace and love to those in need. He reached out to those who were despised and rejected by society. He lovingly performed miracles which had a dramatic impact on those who were distressed, diseased and even dead. The climax of His love was seen in His willingness to go to the cross.
He died Sacrificially
Ultimately, Jesus was rejected by those whom He loved and nailed to a cruel, shameful cross. However, this was no accident. It was the very reason for which He had come to earth. On the cross He gave His life, suffered and died, as a sacrifice to take away the sin of the world. During three hours of supernatural darkness the judgement of God that we deserved for our wrongdoings was poured out upon Jesus. He became our substitute, taking our place, paying the penalty, so that we could be forgiven.
He rose Triumphantly
Three days after His death on the cross, Jesus rose victoriously from the grave. Having overcome death Jesus appeared to over 500 different individuals, proving Himself to be alive. 40 days after His resurrection He ascended back into Heaven.
He waits Patiently
The Bible depicts Jesus Christ as standing at the door of the hearts of men and women today. He is knocking, seeking entry into our lives. He wants to come in to forgive our sins, save our souls from Hell, and grant us the gift of eternal life and a home in Heaven.
